10 Quick Surprising Tips About dancing

As a professional dancer i have picked up quite a few little tricks over the years. Usually because i made a whole handful of mistakes and endeavor not to repeat them. Here are 10 quick tips to help dancers whether beginning students, experienced dancers or professionals (probably you have your own).

Build body memory. For each simplified basic movement of the dance or movement activity you wish to improve in. In the end a good teacher can simplify anything you need to understand, but you can't fudge the repetition needed to make a movement become learned.

Increase body awareness. With body awareness its a much quicker process to learn any movement based activity. Without it you can spend years trying to make changes that either will take longer to happen or your body simply won't understand on an intrinsic level.

Find your learning style. Become aware of the ways you learn best e.g. visual, kinesthetic, audio etc. Use the ones you are strongest in while translating to others you are less good in. The translation process makes the learning more profound. For example, i learn visually and kinesthetically but when i first started to teach i had to structure things in a verbal way for my students. Especially with questions but also to relate to the many students who aren't able to learn from a simply visual perspective. I found by making this translation of dance into words i learned a great deal myself too and continue to enjoy this new found learning style.

Give yourself time to find the learning space. Many students arrive at the start time of the class.  Totally understandable with the busyness of most of our lives. But it often results in feeling rushed, not something that promotes learning. With a bit of careful planning you can give yourself 5 minutes to acclimatize before the class starts by arriving a bit earlier. This 5 minutes is great for letting your brain become ready to learn.

Warm up before classes and social dancing. Sometimes it feels silly but warming up the body is really important. The more the activity asks from you, and this is personal, the more you should prepare yourself for it. When you are warm you also most better and more fluidly. The chances of one of those dances you will remember is much higher.

Learning is forgetting. Keep in mind that to learn something and take it in at a deeper level we often need to see it several times. Similar to body memory but for the brain. Let yourself forget things as part of the learning process.

Make sure your clothes don't hold you back. Depending on the type of activity you do, make sure your clothing allows for the movements you want to do as well as keeping you sufficiently covered. There is nothing worse than trying to do something and finding you either can't do it or don't want to as it leaves you exposed.

Take time for your own translation. Particularly for partner dancers but also for students who take a lot of classes. Its useful to take 5 minutes by yourself to put all the things you have learned into your own words and understanding. You can take a step deeper to try and link other things you do as part of your activity into this and check it with a trusted teacher or more experienced dancer. I always invite my students to check ideas with me and also tell them when its possible but not my personal approach or maybe i don't have the answer due to it being outside my expertise or comes down to a choice for the student i can't answer for them. After all i am not a guru but a dancer.

The first time you learn something sticks with you forever, or until you do a lot of hard work to change it. The first time we properly learn something we take it into our memory in a more profound way than the second and third times. Its good to make sure that you understand it correctly this first time and that you are getting quality information. This way you will avoid many bad habits that form due to misinformation. Secondly the amount of work it takes to change this first memory once made.

Ask your teachers why. If your activity is anything like Argentine tango then the question why is a good one. In tango everyone and anyone can teach, with a huge range in abilities to dance and abilities to teach. There are good dancers and terrible teachers, good teachers and terrible dancers and everything in between. The question why tends to cut through the crap. If they can give you a solid and clear reason why, then they probably know what they are talking about. If not then you can think on this. Just be a little aware of the difference between question about a step or subject being taught and questioning the teacher themselves. The second one is unpleasant on the receiving end and feels as though you are being asked for you credentials as a teacher. This is likely to close up most teachers making this a moot point. Active learning is essential to efficient learning and becoming more proficient. Its also rewarding and personally i find it gives a lot of enjoyment.

I hope these were useful. Try them out and if you want more information post a comment below. It would be great if you can spread the word about our new blog using some of the buttons below. We will regularly be posting information about dance, health and a little on Argentine tango.

Art work and creativity by Isolde Kanikani

Art has always played a huge part in my life. Whether it be with painting, dancing making music or helping others to make art, its always been there. Taking many forms like modeling for photographers and model shoots. Sometimes these get shown and sometimes remain something hidden or become part of a paid for portfolio by some business or artist or other. Most of all art has been a way of relaxing, expressing present situations and exploring myself in process. The end result being secondary. Now i am finding some of the pictures that have moved me and i am left wondering what to do with this part of my world.

Crutches... New chapter to the crazy chronicles

Thursday 25th august i manage to step down on a spade hard to dig up the stubborn bamboo plant i wanted to take and plant in my new studio. during the forceful action my flimsy shoe breaks and i end up bringing vulnerable flesh down on sharp spade top.  I can't put my weight on it so i crawl through the garden including all the weeds and things i have cut back to leave the garden nice, calling for my father who has fallen asleep in the big armchair in the living room. Then my ex man returns home and finds me half sitting inside and half outside trying not to make a mess of the house with profusely bleeding foot. we bandage it and he picks me up and takes me to the car where we get the foot checked out at the doctor.

Carried into the emergency room and the doctor smiling at the sight, me sheepishly half laughing half smiling. The doctor examines the foot and gives the news that no tendons are broken which is lucky a htis would mean months of recovery. Simply a few nerves might be damages but these will grow back in time. Also that i need a number of stitches but the anesthetic will probably be as painful as the stitches. So i decide to go for the stitches without anesthetic, my god was it painful but i managed to not move or cry out until the last stitch which was directly on a nerve or sensitive point. the last one really throbs even now.

After the doctors and back to the house, i go with my father to pick up some crutches so at least i am able to be a little independent in the next days. Its amazing here, you walk into a shop and hand over your insurance information. Sign a form and eh voula you have rented crutches.

Thursday after getting back home i tried to go to the supermarket just down the road in good old stubborn Isolde style. It was hard and i managed it, but my god do i have a new found respect for anyone who can't simply go to a shop without some walking aid or wheelchair. As a dancer after day 3 i am itching to walk, dance, run, jump as i am used to. so trying to put sunday to use with the finishing of my book.

The quality of equality, equalizing or celebrating the individual?

At the moment within Compania Cielito we are working behind the scenes to set up a structure of roles for each individual who is also dancing in the group. This enables us to keep the costs down while giving each individual the possibility to give more to the group process through their own professional and personal abilties. Making the team far stronger than if you rely on one individuals capabiltiies that are always and very naturally limited to a set number of skills and weaknesses.

In one of our meetings a question came up about equality from one of our members, who assumed that equality meant that everyone should have control over all aspects of the teams behind the scenes work. It raises an interesting question about equality in relation to effective team work, individuals taking responsibility and authority in areas of expertise. What is equality? whether in a team like ours, the battle between the sexes in the feminist movement or in a relationship between 2 people. In many ways similar to the situation of a communist regime or the purely capitalist approach seen as two extremes.

My take on it is that there are two basic options:

1. Equality can be taken as the giving of equal power and authority in all aspects, usually decisions are made by group consensus with some individuals pushing an agenda. Equalizing regardless of social standing, income, abilities.

2. Equality through the realization that we are all different, with this having different skills, weaknesses, interests, motivations and formed conceptualization about what the world means to us. Within a team or company the hope is to create a team of people with complimentary skills that also bypass the effect an individuals weakness might have.

These different idea of equality are often the reason for misunderstanding within our group process. I wonder now if the first understanding is more governed by personal wish to control rather than trust others to get things done. A personal element also exists that people want to do things they like to do and this approach to equality makes it seem viable.

I am a big advocate of the second understanding of equality. Over the years in various group processes i have started from the first one as an ideal for the way i am working with people. My experience was that there was a lot of inclarity in situations, individuals pushing for things they want or need at the expense of what we do as a collective and at times at the expense of other individuals in the group. It also means that individuals don't feel seen for what they are able to do and often don't recieve enough authority from the rest of the team to be effective.

SO... now in this process i think its time to get clear that we are aiming for a way of working that celebrates the individuals ability within our team, giving them authority by entrusting them with the responsibility to get it done. Actively following their lead and giving help and support when needed. Less formal structuralization and more clarity of our roles enabling a free flow of supporting each other rather than being bogged down with formality and procedure. There will always be things we want to do from another role, sometimes there will be a space for this and sometimes not. I have the feeling people should earn the things they want, in the sense that often more work is created to achieve what is wanted so the individual needs to show they are serious and willing to but the work in to make it worth while. Realising that its more than a playground wim but that there are actual skills involved that need learning and appreciating before some aspects of the team work can be shared. Next challenge is to define this idea of working. More thought needed...

Keep the love flowing

Its been a short time since i have been single again, and it in many ways this should have have happened much sooner. But everything is easier in hindsight. The relationship was beautiful while we were working together keeping the magic alive, but due to things i feel we weren't able to deal with, this time was actually quite quickly replaced by hanging onto something. Something that was indeed beautiful, meaningful and worth nurturing. And somehow we together weren't knowledgeable enough about how to do this, not in agreement about how to move beyond this. But for me now i talk for myself.

In an almost 10 year relationship starting from the moment we met to the moment i found my whole future had changed with my loves wishes, to the moment he set me free and me leaving. i loved deeply and lost myself. Partly due to my own chameleon like nature searching for harmony, and partly due to the fact i was so young when making this commitment to a man who was older and naturally more set in his ways. We met on a level of communication that suited us, but as i developed over the years i got more and more frustrated by not being able to share things and feeling like there were things happening between us that would take months and months to talk about and even shed one word. It improved slowly but we grew apart in what we wanted. Due to live changing changes not being communicated i was very slow in realising that what i wanted and had thought to be possible with this man indeed wasn't. And sadly most of these things had developed because of our first years together and the beautiful strong feeling that was developed. The last 3 years were spent in a sort of limbo between being happy and being scared of losing all that i had worked hard for in my home. Home being the new country i had moved to, the change in my way of working, the dreams that we had once shared of a home and family, stopping with a dance partner i really miss, learning dutch tax law of all things to run a business. I changed my life for love and when it left me i was suddenly free of working hard for a life i had loved but now didn't fit me any longer. The relationship being thoroughly mourned by the upheaval of being pushed away and pulled in again time after time.

I surprised myself that while i was deeply sad underneath i was ready to move on in 2 or 3 weeks. Getting out there again, not holding myself back to be with someone who was in the end very different, very loveable but hard work to connect with. After some weeks of experimenting, dating, catching up with old possibles and questioning myself constantly in what i wanted. i have moved into a new phase. i hadn't realised that the underlying thing i have been afraid of was being left, in many ways by many people i have been left all my life and its been a big dissapointment. i learned to cut off, to not show myself which wasn't very healthy and i pushed myself more than ever to overcome this with my ex man. i don't tell this because i feel sorry for myself but to explain the context. i process things super quickly and last week i reallised my fear, and also that its unfair to expect people to stay forever. This weekend i took some time for myself and let these ideas process. i am still scared to love, and still scared of people leaving but decided to embrace the people around me anyway and keep the love flowing.

Forever thankful to the friends who have grown in the last months, the beautiful men i have met and got to know and the things life is bringing into my world now that i am open to it.

Valhalla that is my heart where loved ones reside

These last months of situations and last years of in one sense losses in my life have lead to a somewhat sound sense of what death means to me. Be it the little death or a shedding of skins that leads to new possibilities of horizons, le petit morte which is definitely not as bad as it sounds, the death of body of loved ones and even my own mortality. Death can be both beautiful and positive as it can be upsetting causing deep emotions of grief  and loneliness. So a half poem half text dedicated to all these myriad moments where one reality it shedded and let go for a new one.

Hiding from feeling anything
And yet not hiding at all
am i in shock or denial,
Intense pain or exuberant freedom
that is intoxicating every cell of my body.
Shedding the skins of bounderies and hurts past
for a radiant glistening skin

i am human, i am myself again
i am feeling and analytical and living
I am my loves and i am my friends
I am all that is my family
There is no we anymore, no second heart to care for
Only my own, which seems to be a busy place
I miss your heart and realize i am surrounded by them

Valhalla that is my heart where loved ones reside,
by choosing to feel intensely i open myself to love
and pain in equal measure,
Not to love is no life at all
Valhalla of my heart where you reside
Grandpas, grandmas, my beloved uncle,
father, mother, brother and cousins

Valhalla that is my heart with open doors to another world
of acceptance and love, closeness, longing and desire.
Existing and believing we are worth our deepest most profound dreams
Thankful to the man who showed me love exists,
and to another who showed me what is could become,
to the others who have touched my soul with your grace
others who brought pain so bad as to make me renew myself.

Valhalla that is my hurt hurting with continual expansion,
yet feeling at peace with its new metamorphosed existance,
Friends who are like stable rocks, new ones like family you never had.
Old ones who have become brothers and sisters
and a cousin who for eternity will be a mix of these all.
People keep you company on the road fo life,
taking you down the highway  with its easy access and flow
At times down a hidden forgotten path
with obstacles that befuddle you and keep you lost
until miraculously you find the main road leading continuously
into the near or far future where i will also rest.
But for now touching every now and again the love that resides in my heart.

Are we fated & is there someone looking out for us up there?

Today has been a day of fun, reminders that somehow the universe knows what one needs and difficulty knowing how to act respectfully in regards to a decision one personally completely doesn't understand. Are we regulated by fate, some force to be defined or simply randomly exist without any guidance at all?

This is such an individual topic without right answers, simply a recognition of how you might feel about events in relation to your life and the possibility of choice.

i can only write about my own experiences today. Today i believe that somehow miraculously the universe sent me the things i needed. In not so many words you could say the universe made me feel beautiful and appreciated by sending me asian guys and a really cute guy i would have liked to get to know a bit more but didn't take the opportunity. I was a bit surprised by it to respond. being followed by a car for a few blocks is fairly normal but the important thing is that it made me laugh where i only felt sad before. It seems that when you are on the right path you are looked after by the universe and when on the bumpy side road to no where its simply difficult. i just got on the highway again after quite some years of bumpy.

So is this a form of reward for being in the right place or is fate such that you get the good with the bad. While i can't answer this question i can feel blessed today. Thank you...

Introverted, emotional or sensitive?

Introverted, emotional or sensitive is a subject that has come up in many of my conversations recently. I am not an expert on any of these but feel a constant question over emotions and how they affect me individually and others in relation to me. I have seen that to be introverted is the new cool and emotional often portrayed as something negative. Sensitive on the other hand has connotations of good but weak. Or at least this is my take on it. Alongside these 3 words a further question arises, are we all made equal? I am guessing not from the myriad of people out there with their multitude of variations where emotional intelligence is concerned.

I would say I fall under all three categories but at the same time feel strongly that these and their counterparts are simply a tool for helping us understand ourselves, rather than something that is inherently good or bad. Its Like a tool kit full of a small range of tools we are born to use. These tools have a natural purpose like a hammer for hitting things or scissors for cutting. By understanding them you can not only bang a nail into a wall but you can create a a building. For me introversion and extroversion are similar. I was strongly effected by the negative associations that people had with introversion when i was growing up. i would get asked why i am quiet or shy. i learned to hide it in favour of a set of behavior patterns that would be considered extroverted, but little did i realize that to do this took a lot more energy than the natural extroverts used. I got exhausted more quickly and had to hide alone for a while to recuperate my energy. This in term made me feel bad because i wasn't living up to the extroverted ideal. Recently i came across an article on Linked In celebrating the abilities of introverts and it started me on the journey to exploring this personality trait i seem to have and what it means for me. Further letting go of some of these patterns that in actual fact hurt me energetically and leave me drained. I am in a process of becoming more myself and showing it.

I think for myself the idea of being emotional is a matter of opinion and seems to be a lot less clear than the personality traits above. My recent discovery of a book called the highly sensitive person while slow going was intriguing for the idea that someone had put some science behind the idea of being sensitive. i would consider myself someone with deep seated emotions and until about 9 years ago never opened up to anyone. The process of sharing my inner world with others has been difficult and rewarding. But the more i share the more i realize how truly unique all are in our experiences of emotions, their intensity and complexity. Added to this is the part we give them in our lives. Some ive sway to their emotional sub world while others hardly allow them to exist.

Over sensitivity to others is also intriguing me. When i was younger i became really confused when what i sensed of others around me didn't match with what they talked about. With some they later confessed that i saw more quickly than they had what they were feeling and that they needed time to catch up, sometimes resenting me for my sensitivity. While with others, they either weren't wanting to admit to the emotions or i had got it wrong. Making the whole process very hard to learn from. Because its only in hindsight that i can ever tell what the situation was and how i can improve the perception of emotions in people around me in the future.

So in conclusion i dub myself an introvert with extrovert tendencies. Deeply and complexly emotional while being highly sensitive to those around me. The challenge for me through the years has always to avoid my chameleon tendencies of fitting in with the needs and wishes of those around me and find a firm footing for myself to be as I was meant to be. The search is still on.

21 Beautifully Nostalgic photos of Buenos Aires

Yesterday i began sorting through the many thousands of photos i have collected up over the years. As a professional dancer i got to travel to many interesting places around the globe for giving workshops and performances and the wonderful excuse of going to Argentina for training. With 11 visits to Buenos Aires under my belt and each for 1-3 months. Its been a place where i have grown as a person, fallen in love, learned my art and fallen in love with a culture. My Business name Cielito comes from the first place i stayed in Argentina called El Cielo, aptly named for being on the third floor and having an amazing roof top terrace completely open to the sky.  Along side the dancing and upgrading my dance level, i often got out to photograph the city. It was a wonderful way to enjoy the weather and see something more of this amazingly beautiful and varied city. Stepping out of the tourist traps into the unknown backstreets with political graffiti, street art of all shapes and sizes and somehow a more authentic Buenos Aires than the places you might first visit on arrival. Its funny to think back that i was very shy about taking a lot of photos with a good camera, mostly because of the poverty i saw there and felt strange having so much myself. Other times i took out a very basic small camera because of this feeling, so this restricted the quality i could get at times.

One of my favourite things to photograph is the combination of interesting buildings and all types of weather. Another interest that works well within this is street art combined with people authentically doing their thing rather than posing for the camera. Mixing up textures, shape and light sometimes with strong edits and often I show the raw photo as it was taken.

Buenos Aires is more than the capital of tango. When walking in the streets and moving through various Barrios or districts, one gets the distinct feeling of stepping between multiple worlds. Where the boundery between one and another can be the difference of a street. With a myriad of themes ranging from political graffiti, forgotten gardens, highrised buildings, the reserve, the river itself, florida with well kept modern feeling, plaza Dorriego with its mix of tourism and antiquated nostalgia to name a few. Buenos Aires is well worth a visit for anyone who loves buildings and history, not to mention the rich folk dance culture of argentina that is often faded out by the better known Argentine tango.

Mouth ecstasy with newest lactose free combo, mouthwatering raspberries and pomegranate...

Being lactose intolerant to say the least is pretty much a pain when you see those lovely desserts you get in a restaurant or ice cream in the summer or watching a film for that matter. I miss real dairy ice cream from the days before i know what made me ill when trying food not made at home by lactose allergic mother. The best or worse (in a totally gorgeously over the top way) is Ben and Jerrys ice cream. Among my favourites where the chunky monkey, caramel chew chew and the chubby hubby. So much decadence to enjoy while watching a great movie with family or friends. I think ice cream was the hardest thing to give up when i found out that i have a near allergy level intolerance to all things dairy food. Growing up with a lactose allergic mother meant i didn't get used to cheese or butter on bread or many of the sauces made with both these. This helps to not miss things and even go as far as to avoid going past cheese shops because the smell makes me want to run a mile. Its probably a bit comical from the outside when i hold my breath passing, i can often glimpse my boyfriend holding back a joke until we are safely away.

So what happens when i have lactose food? I get ill with a teaspoon equivalent of ice cream and have a massive skin reaction to boot. The illness is sickness then dizzyness and lightheaded lasting for about 4 - 6  days.

But its not all bad as many who have food allergies and intolerances will tell. Once you discover your intolerance and get used to what you can and can't eat its amazing because you feel great and become aware of many more food options than you might have done otherwise. I love to cook, to explore new combinations that are lactose free, health promoting and also very important that look and taste great.

It makes you creative in finding yummy combos that make up for the things you can't have. My latest taste combination is mouthwatering raspberries and pomegranate pieces mounded on top of vanilla soy yogurt. Caressed with acacia honey and linseeds (flaxseed) added for a digestive system healthy option that gives a wonderful texture and nutty flavour to the mix. It gets even easier with the frozen fruit options you can buy in the supermarket making the yogurt the only thing you need to make sure is stocked at home for this great dessert. All the other things keep nicely in a cuboard or freezer for the day you want something satisfyingly sweet without the lactose, calories and has great health benefits.

Finding my niche...Holistic style concept: don't let your clothes wear you!!!

In a personal message a couple of days ago a reader from this blog asked me a really good question. Why have i set up a blog talking about fashion, style and tips for these areas when there are so may already doing this? While i had an answering feeling i wasn't able to directly put it into words until now. While i started the blog as an experiment, finding my way in social media and putting a lot of the things i was learning into blogging. I found that i do indeed have a message that has gone through my work, social and personal life in the last years. Holistic style is a concept i haven't seen anywhere else, although i see many making similar connections. Holistic style is my ongoing message to the world and is an underlying current in many of the articles i write on this blog. I want to empower the individual by giving knowledge and experiences freely. Create more through sharing than holding everything in for myself. so what is Holistic style?

Holistic style is about empowering the individual to think past the outfit into the realms of personal expression and the choices we have. Looking at how we, many of us use clothing as an unconscious barrier for protection with wishes to hide, to be clearly seen and through this hiding, be age appropriate, to fit in with others, to not fit in with others or simply cover up our body with something so we don't get arrested in the street. The list goes on.

Healthy acceptance of the things we can't change and feel less happy with while being proactive with the ones we can do something about. Ok, you can't change your basic build, but with more education and awareness of health, fitness and the inner workings of our mind and troubles that go with this we can open up many choices of how we want to present ourselves to the world. Choosing our barriers, bridging the gap between inner world and how we wish to be seen. Lastly image in an ever increasingly important topic in todays society. With the emphasis on photos, infographics and everything visual. The way we present ourselves through demeanor and style is important. You know when that person who is in your opinion sightly weirdly dressed walks past wearing what looks like every piece of clothing and jewellery they own, you are making a decision and assumptions about who they are. Or that business person who has gone for the power dressing option of wearing a suit, but in actual fact he looks like every other clone to walk into an office becoming invisible. People see the suit and not the individual making a mockery of the idea of power dressing.  Own the suit, bring forth your personality and conquer, ok not advocating war here but a little living in your own skin is a must for all who want to avoid being used by your own clothing.  Don't sit back and let your clothes overpower you, make choices, take control and let the inner beauty shine through.

Style tip: accessories galore

Whether your style is simple or built on small details that make the final outcome, accessories can really make a difference to an outfit.

Some basic things to consider when choosing accessories:

  • Choose accessories that accent your out fit of the day
  • Consider colours that complement your hair, skin and outfit colours.
  • With jewellery its often the case that we wear the wrong colour. With the choice of gold, silver and rose gold, you should relate the colour you wear to the tone of your skin. more info here.
  • Watch out for over doing it, while its great to accent too much can over power the rest of what you are wearing.
  • Ask yourself what you want to accentuate about your body and out fit of the day. Is it your waist, the find a belt. Your face, then a good pair of earrings and hair drawn back is a great option.

My personal tips used when i choose accessories:

  • When looking at jewellery like necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings. i often choose maximum 1 for a relaxed look, 2 for simple with often small earrings.
  • I won't wear big earrings and a necklace or bracelet and rings. This is an easy way to avoid crowding.
  • When wearing hats be aware of how this affects your hair and if you want a lively hair look later in the day. Many hats flatten hair and bring out natural oils from scalp causing a less than fresh glossy look. A thin barret is great from protecting hair from getting frizzy when traveling outside between meetings and performances.
  • Belts are great for accentuating your waist and you can wear them at three heights e.g. hips, waistline or empire bust line. These each bring about different lines in the body.
  • If you have beautiful details on a neckline of a dress or top then a half up hair style or completely up hairstyle will show this off.
  • This one is going to sound funny but be careful of your associations with the use of somethings getting in the way of using it creatively. Take a scarf for example, there are a hundred and one ways to use it as a scarf but it can also be used as a top, as a skirt, as a dress (if big enough), head scarf, belt. Think outside of the box and enjoy your creativity.

Style tip: How to Sit gorgeously

This style tip goes further than clothing into how to use the lines of your body to bring elegance to any outfit you want to wear. While trousers make sitting with your legs apart more acceptable, lolloping around will not impress that boss who we want a job from, the cute guy sitting across from us or make people feel at ease accept when you are in your own home watching tv. I hope you don't mind that i am a little blunt with some of the explanations.

Which of these three pictures directly below look elegant to you?

Common mistakes include:

  • Leaving legs falling open, I call this the take me now position.
  • twisting legs into strange positions, often makes legs look short and fat becuase there is no beauty lines for the eyes to follow.
  • fidgeting and moving around a lot, implies to those around that you are not focused or disciplined to stay still.
  • leaving oneself exposed  unwittingly, often by resting one leg at right angles to the one left on the floor.

Picture 1: top leg is twisted, Picture 2: bending down with legs open, Picture 3: both legs are twisted

Suggestions for elegance

Pictures of elegant leg positions that will make you look elegant, flatter your legs and show a confidence through a simple gesture in your body language.

Picture 1 directly above brings the knees together for a more relaxed look.

Picture 2 is a nice crossed leg position without twisted legs giving a flattering line and shape to the legs.

Picture 3 is an elegant take on crossed legs taking the feet to one side creating a diagonal look on the legs. This is also much more comfortable for the hips for most people meaning you can stay comfortable longer.

Picture 4 is great if you don't want to cross legs and keeps both legs using your hip joint in this position more naturally. humans weren't designed to sit preferring the laying down or stand positions.

Picture 5 is a variation on 1 with the free leg going to the front rather than to the side.

Picture 6 is an elegant position for picking up something from the floor, especially if you have a short skirt or dress on. It helps to avoid indecent exposure or at the least exposure you didn't want to make.

I hope this helps. This article is not meant to take us back into the dark ages with women walking around with books on their heads. But if we want to wear clothing successfully some of those great tips from the old days still apply.
