Are you stressed, tired, over worked, have the feeling lots of things...

Are you stressed, tired, over worked, have the feeling lots of things are going strange or wrong and people are taking what they can get when you don't have the energy to be strong?
A little while ago i came by accident on a way to deal with my stress. I am someone who gives a 110% in all things that i do and if i feel its not going as well as it should i can easily feel bad about it. This is definitely the case with people who you try to help and for whatever reason the situation turns around on you. From you helping to getting a back lash that can happen for any number of reasons.

Rather than feel bad about the situations and wollow in self pity or the loss of empowermeant you can do something about it. A small tuning in exercise that enables you to get clear, get active and help yourself into a positive state.

Take a deep breath and write the most comprehensive list of all the things you are feeling, what is stressing you out or making you tired and practical things you feel bad about in some way for whatever reason.

Once you have made the list recognize points that are:
1. Feelings to explore but not be ruled by.
2. Practical things that can be sorted out with planning. Make a plan to get them done with a lot extra time than you actually need.
3. Urgent things that you can sort out quickly and will almost instantly give a feeling of relief.

This is one of the most self empowering things i have done for myself in a long time. I keep forgetting that this works for me so i thought by sharing i might remember better myself.

Cat door knocking service... Best business idea ever!

I am walking home, gathering ideas about the ideal image of my business in a few years to come. A question I never ask myself with true conviction as I always get ploughed away by whats practical. Scaling down my ideas before I am even started.

So thinking big and out of the box, I am walking through a neighborhood close to one of my studios. It's cold and wet with winds that blow through your clothing leaving you cold to the bone. A lovely little bundle of joy catches my attention, with a not so joyful expression on its face. It runs up to me and then to the door of its home. Sudden clarity comes with my imagination more like leaping out of the box at this point, sprinting into woods and swimming an ocean. Best business idea ever... a cat door knocking service.

To remind cats pets (their owners) that they indeed need to be let inside to the cozy warmth of their territorial home. A door knocking service where some human prawls through neighborhoods on the search for cats in distress. In one moment came the idea and the next second i was laughing openly in the street. But seriously a cat door opening service, genius!

Many individuals are either creative in business or practical. Taking this as their base of operations that defines the way they plan, step into the world and deliver. Learning to balance these forces is key to successful business, indeed successful anything. Creativity is amazing but usually needs to be grounded in the here, possible and now. Be given legs to stand on in order to materialize. Practicality can often close down the mind for possibility. But hand in hand, they can lead us to projects and business plans that are both innovative and grounded in logic.

Coming back to the cat door knocking service. Its one of those ideas that sounds unique but when you analyse it you soon realise its a no go. Ok i have taken an extreme business idea but its some how so apt. SO visualise the situation for a moment cat outside door who is in need of being let in. The cat is the customer is this case with a need that can be fulfilled with a product or service thats not presently being offered. This is a situation where a business could come in. SO clearly we should set up a door knocking service right? But did you ask yourself (again ludicrous situation):
  • Can the cat afford such a service, is the as secondary client interested to pay? Your business can't thrive on cat cuddles however nice these are. Cats will love you one moment and leave you the next (talking as a cat lover). With the best of intentions customers can be the same so make sure a) you have the possibility of being paid in means that are healthy for your business and b) that you create a fair transaction where like quality of service is given for like quality of payment for said service. Valueing yourself, your product or service is vital. Checking that you can indeed make the necessary income to run a healthy business.
  • If the service was to become a reality and a door was opened for said cat, what do you think their response would be. Obvious one would be to run into the house. But what if the cat is scared by the door knocker or not that bothered about getting in even though its cute fluffiness looks distraught right at this moment in time. Quality of the customer or client is really important.
  • All is not as it seems at face value, did you stop to think if the cat had a specific reason for being outside? Maybe its only one cat in a million, then the need is big in this one case but there aren't many clients out there who will seriously need a cat door knocking service. Market research and questioning about the number of available clients, location and reason for the need.
Taking a little time in the beginning can save a lot of time and money later on. Not being scared to think big, bringing creativity and practicality to heel. Its always possible to down size an idea. The big ideas give information about your goals and desires as a business starter and maker that are truly insightful. Planning a strategy for success not only is useful for new businesses but helps to focus the writer on the core goals, clients and finance aspects of a business. Giving a clearer vision of the businesses identity for promotion, who the business is for and how it addresses the need of this target group. After careful analysis of about 30 minutes and a lot of laughing (reason it took so long) i decided that i won't be opening a cat door knocking service.

Art work and creativity by Isolde Kanikani

Art has always played a huge part in my life. Whether it be with painting, dancing making music or helping others to make art, its always been there. Taking many forms like modeling for photographers and model shoots. Sometimes these get shown and sometimes remain something hidden or become part of a paid for portfolio by some business or artist or other. Most of all art has been a way of relaxing, expressing present situations and exploring myself in process. The end result being secondary. Now i am finding some of the pictures that have moved me and i am left wondering what to do with this part of my world.

Crutches... New chapter to the crazy chronicles

Thursday 25th august i manage to step down on a spade hard to dig up the stubborn bamboo plant i wanted to take and plant in my new studio. during the forceful action my flimsy shoe breaks and i end up bringing vulnerable flesh down on sharp spade top.  I can't put my weight on it so i crawl through the garden including all the weeds and things i have cut back to leave the garden nice, calling for my father who has fallen asleep in the big armchair in the living room. Then my ex man returns home and finds me half sitting inside and half outside trying not to make a mess of the house with profusely bleeding foot. we bandage it and he picks me up and takes me to the car where we get the foot checked out at the doctor.

Carried into the emergency room and the doctor smiling at the sight, me sheepishly half laughing half smiling. The doctor examines the foot and gives the news that no tendons are broken which is lucky a htis would mean months of recovery. Simply a few nerves might be damages but these will grow back in time. Also that i need a number of stitches but the anesthetic will probably be as painful as the stitches. So i decide to go for the stitches without anesthetic, my god was it painful but i managed to not move or cry out until the last stitch which was directly on a nerve or sensitive point. the last one really throbs even now.

After the doctors and back to the house, i go with my father to pick up some crutches so at least i am able to be a little independent in the next days. Its amazing here, you walk into a shop and hand over your insurance information. Sign a form and eh voula you have rented crutches.

Thursday after getting back home i tried to go to the supermarket just down the road in good old stubborn Isolde style. It was hard and i managed it, but my god do i have a new found respect for anyone who can't simply go to a shop without some walking aid or wheelchair. As a dancer after day 3 i am itching to walk, dance, run, jump as i am used to. so trying to put sunday to use with the finishing of my book.

The quality of equality, equalizing or celebrating the individual?

At the moment within Compania Cielito we are working behind the scenes to set up a structure of roles for each individual who is also dancing in the group. This enables us to keep the costs down while giving each individual the possibility to give more to the group process through their own professional and personal abilties. Making the team far stronger than if you rely on one individuals capabiltiies that are always and very naturally limited to a set number of skills and weaknesses.

In one of our meetings a question came up about equality from one of our members, who assumed that equality meant that everyone should have control over all aspects of the teams behind the scenes work. It raises an interesting question about equality in relation to effective team work, individuals taking responsibility and authority in areas of expertise. What is equality? whether in a team like ours, the battle between the sexes in the feminist movement or in a relationship between 2 people. In many ways similar to the situation of a communist regime or the purely capitalist approach seen as two extremes.

My take on it is that there are two basic options:

1. Equality can be taken as the giving of equal power and authority in all aspects, usually decisions are made by group consensus with some individuals pushing an agenda. Equalizing regardless of social standing, income, abilities.

2. Equality through the realization that we are all different, with this having different skills, weaknesses, interests, motivations and formed conceptualization about what the world means to us. Within a team or company the hope is to create a team of people with complimentary skills that also bypass the effect an individuals weakness might have.

These different idea of equality are often the reason for misunderstanding within our group process. I wonder now if the first understanding is more governed by personal wish to control rather than trust others to get things done. A personal element also exists that people want to do things they like to do and this approach to equality makes it seem viable.

I am a big advocate of the second understanding of equality. Over the years in various group processes i have started from the first one as an ideal for the way i am working with people. My experience was that there was a lot of inclarity in situations, individuals pushing for things they want or need at the expense of what we do as a collective and at times at the expense of other individuals in the group. It also means that individuals don't feel seen for what they are able to do and often don't recieve enough authority from the rest of the team to be effective.

SO... now in this process i think its time to get clear that we are aiming for a way of working that celebrates the individuals ability within our team, giving them authority by entrusting them with the responsibility to get it done. Actively following their lead and giving help and support when needed. Less formal structuralization and more clarity of our roles enabling a free flow of supporting each other rather than being bogged down with formality and procedure. There will always be things we want to do from another role, sometimes there will be a space for this and sometimes not. I have the feeling people should earn the things they want, in the sense that often more work is created to achieve what is wanted so the individual needs to show they are serious and willing to but the work in to make it worth while. Realising that its more than a playground wim but that there are actual skills involved that need learning and appreciating before some aspects of the team work can be shared. Next challenge is to define this idea of working. More thought needed...

Valhalla that is my heart where loved ones reside

These last months of situations and last years of in one sense losses in my life have lead to a somewhat sound sense of what death means to me. Be it the little death or a shedding of skins that leads to new possibilities of horizons, le petit morte which is definitely not as bad as it sounds, the death of body of loved ones and even my own mortality. Death can be both beautiful and positive as it can be upsetting causing deep emotions of grief  and loneliness. So a half poem half text dedicated to all these myriad moments where one reality it shedded and let go for a new one.

Hiding from feeling anything
And yet not hiding at all
am i in shock or denial,
Intense pain or exuberant freedom
that is intoxicating every cell of my body.
Shedding the skins of bounderies and hurts past
for a radiant glistening skin

i am human, i am myself again
i am feeling and analytical and living
I am my loves and i am my friends
I am all that is my family
There is no we anymore, no second heart to care for
Only my own, which seems to be a busy place
I miss your heart and realize i am surrounded by them

Valhalla that is my heart where loved ones reside,
by choosing to feel intensely i open myself to love
and pain in equal measure,
Not to love is no life at all
Valhalla of my heart where you reside
Grandpas, grandmas, my beloved uncle,
father, mother, brother and cousins

Valhalla that is my heart with open doors to another world
of acceptance and love, closeness, longing and desire.
Existing and believing we are worth our deepest most profound dreams
Thankful to the man who showed me love exists,
and to another who showed me what is could become,
to the others who have touched my soul with your grace
others who brought pain so bad as to make me renew myself.

Valhalla that is my hurt hurting with continual expansion,
yet feeling at peace with its new metamorphosed existance,
Friends who are like stable rocks, new ones like family you never had.
Old ones who have become brothers and sisters
and a cousin who for eternity will be a mix of these all.
People keep you company on the road fo life,
taking you down the highway  with its easy access and flow
At times down a hidden forgotten path
with obstacles that befuddle you and keep you lost
until miraculously you find the main road leading continuously
into the near or far future where i will also rest.
But for now touching every now and again the love that resides in my heart.

Are we fated & is there someone looking out for us up there?

Today has been a day of fun, reminders that somehow the universe knows what one needs and difficulty knowing how to act respectfully in regards to a decision one personally completely doesn't understand. Are we regulated by fate, some force to be defined or simply randomly exist without any guidance at all?

This is such an individual topic without right answers, simply a recognition of how you might feel about events in relation to your life and the possibility of choice.

i can only write about my own experiences today. Today i believe that somehow miraculously the universe sent me the things i needed. In not so many words you could say the universe made me feel beautiful and appreciated by sending me asian guys and a really cute guy i would have liked to get to know a bit more but didn't take the opportunity. I was a bit surprised by it to respond. being followed by a car for a few blocks is fairly normal but the important thing is that it made me laugh where i only felt sad before. It seems that when you are on the right path you are looked after by the universe and when on the bumpy side road to no where its simply difficult. i just got on the highway again after quite some years of bumpy.

So is this a form of reward for being in the right place or is fate such that you get the good with the bad. While i can't answer this question i can feel blessed today. Thank you...

Finding my niche...Holistic style concept: don't let your clothes wear you!!!

In a personal message a couple of days ago a reader from this blog asked me a really good question. Why have i set up a blog talking about fashion, style and tips for these areas when there are so may already doing this? While i had an answering feeling i wasn't able to directly put it into words until now. While i started the blog as an experiment, finding my way in social media and putting a lot of the things i was learning into blogging. I found that i do indeed have a message that has gone through my work, social and personal life in the last years. Holistic style is a concept i haven't seen anywhere else, although i see many making similar connections. Holistic style is my ongoing message to the world and is an underlying current in many of the articles i write on this blog. I want to empower the individual by giving knowledge and experiences freely. Create more through sharing than holding everything in for myself. so what is Holistic style?

Holistic style is about empowering the individual to think past the outfit into the realms of personal expression and the choices we have. Looking at how we, many of us use clothing as an unconscious barrier for protection with wishes to hide, to be clearly seen and through this hiding, be age appropriate, to fit in with others, to not fit in with others or simply cover up our body with something so we don't get arrested in the street. The list goes on.

Healthy acceptance of the things we can't change and feel less happy with while being proactive with the ones we can do something about. Ok, you can't change your basic build, but with more education and awareness of health, fitness and the inner workings of our mind and troubles that go with this we can open up many choices of how we want to present ourselves to the world. Choosing our barriers, bridging the gap between inner world and how we wish to be seen. Lastly image in an ever increasingly important topic in todays society. With the emphasis on photos, infographics and everything visual. The way we present ourselves through demeanor and style is important. You know when that person who is in your opinion sightly weirdly dressed walks past wearing what looks like every piece of clothing and jewellery they own, you are making a decision and assumptions about who they are. Or that business person who has gone for the power dressing option of wearing a suit, but in actual fact he looks like every other clone to walk into an office becoming invisible. People see the suit and not the individual making a mockery of the idea of power dressing.  Own the suit, bring forth your personality and conquer, ok not advocating war here but a little living in your own skin is a must for all who want to avoid being used by your own clothing.  Don't sit back and let your clothes overpower you, make choices, take control and let the inner beauty shine through.

4 Reasons Why You Can develop a sense for style

Ever felt like you don’t have any idea what is stylish and what is not, throwing on the safest combination of clothes from your wardrobe to simply be dressed. Rather than get frustrated or insecure that what your wearing doesn’t work as an outfit. i am talking to the the guys as much as the girls here.  recently i have been going out and asking friends and acquaintances what they think about style and also putting forward the interesting question ‘ do you feel stylish?’ More interestingly many people i talked to, don’t have a clear sense of what style is and this arises before they can answer whether they are in style or not. The second is that from those who felt they understood style as a topic, couldn’t fathom how to bring this concept into their lives practically. Lastly, the topic that comes to light is wanting to look good but not loose their individuality to a preconceived idea that we must wear high end brands like Versace and Chanel to be stylish. In this article we will look at a definition of style and how everyone including you can develop a sense of style without loosing your identity. In fact with these tips you can feel more sense of self while engaging personal power through informed choice about the way you express yourself in all aspects of life.

In the broadest sense style for me is making choices about the way you present yourself, with awareness of how you feel, how you want to impact others and what you need to wear practically to get things done.

1. Build awareness of the choices and influence.

By becoming more aware of the points below, you can better understand some of the influences that should be considered while choosing what to wear. The best thing is only you can answer these for yourself, helping you to define your personal style.
  • Becoming aware of how you feel on any given day and choosing an outfit that brings the most to this.
  • Consider the types of clothes that attract you and the ones that don’t feel right when you wear them.
  • Being aware of what you need to do during the day and the tasks this involves. Be it practical and getting dirty or in the office with a boss you have to impress. Changing if need be to suit the task at hand.
  • What impression do you want to leave behind in different situations during the day and how can you use your outward appearance to achieve this.
  • Do you want to fit into the crowd or standing out, the choice is yours.

2. Experiment outside your safe comfort zone, you might just surprise yourself.

Try out many of the typical styles and see what you feel fits and what doesn’t. Trying out things that go beyond your taste limits quickly inform you where you want to be. Avoiding altogether could mean staying always safe within a basics range you go for each and everyday. Not to mention you might just surprise yourself with what looks good and what feels good. More often than not we like somethings but not others, mixing is good for the individual. After all you are the one wearing the clothes. Why not mix it up a bit wearing punk one day and demure office suit the next.

3. Style is more than clothing it’s about expressing your personality.

How can you do this if you don’t know, are in hiding, don’t like who you are or are very critical. Be good to yourself and celebrate the great things you like about yourself, accept the things you don’t like and can’t change while getting proactive is getting rid of the ones you can change. This is a great way to boost confidence while creating more awareness of aspects of your character and body that will help later in clothing choices.

4. Choices with expression.

Sometimes its useful to be part of a crowd, moving inconspicuously. At other times you want to stand out in the room with a clear message to the people around you about who you are and what your purpose is in that moment. Most of the times its great to simply go with the flow of how we are naturally, not thinking about it too much.

i Have at least 7 different versions of Isolde, ranging from training dancer, to teacher, to performer to business owner and then there is me when i am at home chilling out on the sofa. Style is about choice of how people see you, empowering the individual to define themselves in a world all about image, persona and knowledge. Wear the clothes don’t let them wear you!

Crazy work loads and tip for proper planning in small businesses...

Last summer i found that i wasn't enjoying the biggest aspect of my work anymore and wondered how administration had become so important when i used to be a professional dancer. Running a small self employed business to enable me to work with dance.  I still am a professional dancer in title and can find the funny side now when people ask what you do during the day, as if the classes magically organize themselves. The realization was prompted by these questions and so tightly packing my schedule that i didn't have enough time to eat until late at night, let alone do all the calls that were expected of me. It left me wondering about the moment the meaning of my job changed and whether its a sign of the times that it takes more for a small business to run than in the good old days.

Constant touring during my early years as a dancer also made the administration side a lot simpler to handle. If I covered arranging tour dates, my own promotion, the accounts and dance training there was a sense of fulfillment and my working day while full was done. Adding projects, collaborations and starting a tango school in Utrecht meant that suddenly there was a lot more to do and not enough money in the business to pay for more staff. Its a difficult time for any small business, do you take the gamble and pay someone now knowing that if they are good at what they do they will boost business income within a short time frame. Or do you keep going as you are due to inability to imagine or trust a setup with more than one person. Now my work includes the following list and realistically its far more than one person can do well by themselves.
  • Answering at least 30 emails a day to keep on top on the inbox.
  • Book keeping and accounts
  • Creation of projects and concepts
  • Practical teaching, performing, DJing etc
  • The preparation in training, music preparation and choreography not to mention the ongoing work put into creating clear lessons with an emphasis on thought out didactic clarity making way for a transparent and accessible learning process. Argentine tango is not a difficult dance to learn, it just takes practice.
  • Maintaining and developing the STUDIO Cielito. More than a dance space its been created to give affordable space for dancers, movers and theatres makers. More again in the idea of mutual promotion of many different types of organisation that fall under the cultural banner, through space sharing and collaboration.
  • Maintaining a high level of promotion through up to date websites, use of social media, flyers and design to name a few.

Is it time to gamble?

I went with making the running of my business more efficient and clarifying the processes that would enable someone else to take over the things i am less good at or prefer not to do given the chance. So maybe a gamble is in the future but there is also a possibility to close the gamble gap through efficient procedures and planning, further education in weak areas  like growing in the awareness and people skills needed to make a more informed choice about possible people to bring in as staff later.
With this realization and decision, i began a process of working behind the scenes to simplify and clarify the way my business was running and how i wanted it to move forward into the future. Many small business's will recognize that often when starting small its good to have a clear business plan, branding and promotion plans. But while these are important, they get lost in the process of building and getting out there with your product or service. Its only later when a business is either failing or so successful that the administration work load is excessive due to inefficiency and often outweighing the income to support it. I am just in this process now, my business is successful but the amount of work behind the scenes is crazy and doesn't translate into as many clients as it should. Getting rid of the haphazard way of doing things while implementing procedures and planning that can  enable me

to work more efficiently each day. Also making the processes clearer for handing over to someone else. Due to lack of time i have also had to reduce the amount i am doing in the coming months to give time to this back end process. For any small business not at one of the extremes and presently overworked (not sure this exists, smile), i would strongly suggest to do the business planning while you are small and more simple to manage. Continually update your plan with new projects and services, letting it grow as you grow. You define yourself through it giving you more clarity in bringing possible clients to your business.

At risk of sounding self absorbed, the last thing is probably the most important thing and that is to work on is myself. The more i know myself, my skills, my weaknesses and my special gift. The better i can determine who to bring into my team, searching for someone who have a special gift that strengthens mine, filling in for my weakness's and more importantly adding their own strengths. This could be one person or multiple people creating more of a team feeling. While the present is clarifying, the future is open for the imagination and opportunities that may present themselves.

Make tango history and upload!

Introducing 10 tips to find great tango on the web

In this day and age the internet and all things social media are opening up some interesting options for niche groups like Argentine tango lovers to share and bring new information to the surface. Many tango dancers resist all things modernized in the upkeep of the old ways and the charm that comes with them. While i too must confess to being in love with many of the social and practical etiquettes of tango, i am also loving the new information at my fingertips. Like the old black and white videos of people dancing in prehistoric tango times or the up and coming dancers doing their first promotion videos.

Much of tango history has gone uncatalogued making it harder for those who would like to spread informed and widely respected information about Argentine tango. Whether about how tango was danced in the early days with the stories of that time, or indeed techniques every student should learn to become a good dancer. We each have our ideas on this, but with time some of the best resources have diminished with the ageing of orchestra leaders and notable dancers who were around in the good old days when Argentine tango was forming and being shaped. With the natural cycle of life and ageing come the deaths of some of our most renowned maestros and the generations that have witnessed a lifetime of tango and its evolution. Prompting a wish amongst the many Tangueros out there to preserve some of this knowledge in the shape of video interviews, documentaries, articles, and online resources making this information available to the world.

We can actively take part in our Tangos history by becoming active in uploading old footage and publicizing the new dances being created. Below is a short list of some of these new fountains of knowledge, in no particular order.

Tip 1: TENGO UNA PREGUNTA PARA VOS por Pepa Palazon,

A video series where Pepa interviews many of the worlds best known tango dancers. Getting their take on all things tango. Search the above title in youtube to find a huge number of video interviews. Including Julio Balmaceda, Gloria y Rodolfo Dinzel, Milena Plebs. (spanish)
http://www.youtube.com

Tips 2: The Youtube search

Type any of the following words in together and you will find a whole wealth of old videos of everything from D’arienzos dramatic leading of his orchestra in the 1940s to black and white movies of some of the first tangos ever recorded on film. search terms to try: tango orquesta, 1920 tango, 1930 tango, 1940 tango, golden age tango. (various languages) http://www.youtube.com

Tip 3: Todo tango website

Probably one of the best known tango website resources out there, giving deep and informative information about dancers, musicians and all things tango. If you understand spanish then its well worth checking the spanish pages and each language has a different amount of information available. I found the rap sheets on the orchestras useful in getting a feel for how all the different musicians interrelated and through this how the end result we hear today came to be. (Spanish, English, German, Portugese) http://todotango.com/

Tip 4: Tango.info site

This is very basic in the way it looks but if you are interested in no fuss information it provides a great source of information laid out in a utilitarian but easy to understand way. (various languages due to user content submission). https://tango.info/

Tip 5: To tango net

This site has some great articles about everything included in the tango genre http://www.totango.net./

Tip 7: Articles and book by Christine Denniston

i found her articles and website when i first started dancing and in want of more knowledge. With easy to understand and informative writing style, this is a great place to start reading about tango history. (english) http://www.history-of-tango.com/

Tip 8: Tejas tango dictionary

A great regularly updated tango glossery of terms explained. (english) www.tejastango.com/terminology.html

Tip 9: Argentine tango videos net

This is a website dedicated to videos old and new, http://www.argentinetangovideos.net/

Tip 10: Tango and Chaos

Read stories of recent times in Buenos aires with Tango and chaos website - (english) http://www.tangoandchaos.org

With the new information coming to the surface all the time it enables us to further research argentine tangos murky beginnings and hopefully write with a more informed approach than the regurgitation of tango histories out there. Many containing the same play on words, vocabulary and factual information. Wanting to offer my students a history of tango on my website at one time or other, i was also culprit of this. With the continual new information we have a very natural record being created like never before. There are many ways to be an active part in the history of tango, come and join in the fun.

Photography of living ice

Today I had the urge to clear up the garden ready for spring and the beauty of the almond blossom trees mixed with magnolia and the evergreen fresh green of the bamboo. When i entered the garden there were lots of plant pots and buckets laying around since the last storm. I started to turn them over to get rid of the water, with the hope of stacking them up in a tidy corner again. Only to discover beautiful ice creations falling out to the paving stone floor. The little wonder was that there were plants growing inside the safety of the ice.

Not wanting to miss this wonderful opportunity i instantly got the camera and started to play wit other things lying around in the garden. The first pictures are simply of the tine plant that was hiding in the ice. The others are a combination of crab apples, duck egg shell found half buried, moss and periwinkle flowers.

I love the cold weather for taking pictures, if you look around hard enough there is always something interesting and unusual with ice, snow or frost. Harder to get clear well lit photos through, due to overcast and grey light conditions.

Little acts of kindness while….

Today was a glorious day of surprise snow, seizing the moment of sunshine and clear weather to embrace the new found cold and look for beautiful photographs. Putting on the warmest clothes i can find and enjoying the wild sort of photographer look i managed. Helping me to get into the mood of photographing my immediate world. Being present in the moment and enjoying not caring what the world thinks of me. Something i dwell on too often, which also results in me trying to make others as comfortable as i can manage. Only to find i can’t keep it up, and now a relief to let go of.

i am walking finding my first subject, the new park wall stroke fence i find actually quite ugly but somehow with the white snow and the brightness of the day i find there is also beauty in its shape. Next come trees, ducks and water shots with the many romantic bridges in the Maxima park. What struck me in one moment is that i get so caught up in my work that i forget to be in the moment, enjoying what is there rather than trying to continually shape and improve it. As i finished all my photos and the memory card i decided to head back to the warmth. On my way back i saw a mother with two children, trying to get one on her back. as i passed i was smiling and enjoying their fun. they couldn’t manage to do it so i helped the little girl onto her mothers back. It was so sweet to see. Not only had they made me smile but i had made them smile too, giving them a further possibility to enjoy their fun. With one little act of kindness we were all warmed from the inside, oblivious to the cold.

So i am normally not writing on a sunday but find it a wonderful opportunity to invite each of you who read this, to first become present with the space, people and lives going on around you. Second to be open to one little act of kindness and see what comes your way. Third to be open to doing a little act of kindness, that will be sure to warm you through and through.

My first thrift shop adventure

A friend told me about the great finds she bought at a thrift shop a few weeks back and when i was passing one a couple of weeks ago i decided to go in and take a look. I have to admit to having a bit of a barrier about going into these places because while i like the idea of recycling and using things, i didn't think much of the quality a few years ago when i looked in a charity shop. The idea of getting rid of almost new quality things to a place that will sell them at a good price to others and make money for a good cause is great. I have supported this over many years dropping off bags of unwanted things, always finding it easier than simply throwing nice things away. Having found the quality wasn't great before i didn't bother to check out more. I have to also admit a bit of a snob in me associating these places with a feeling you must be desperate to shop there. This is more an association from school where there were always jokes about charity shops and poor people to put it nicely. But going, exploring and seeing the change in these shops was a wonderful surprise. Lovely quality items at a great price. You get a bargain and the shop gets money towards a great cause.

My favorite thing about this new experience is that i have the feeling of finding a creative treasure trove within which the artist in me comes forward. Since moving to the Netherlands i have missed some of the things that don't fit into the highly specific and stylized way of decorating houses, wearing clothes, making restaurant interiors and much more. Even the plants are designed, or this is my feeling anyway. While i love style i thing there should be space for an individual to add their own flair to the mix. For myself i love real wooden furniture, stylized pieces with a bit of wild thrown in.

This experience also made me realize that new isn't necessarily better particularly with this new fashion for fake wooden furniture and endlessly consumerist attitude with buying and getting rid of really great pretty much new things. I am also a culprit of this. With this new fashion of heightened consumerism the quality of things are going down while the price seems to be the same or higher.  have been going almost once a week to a local thrift store finding beautiful things to fuel my artistic license into playing. Not to mention the amazing piano which has given me no end of joy in these last weeks. Playing music by Ludovico Ienaudi and relearning Beethoven's Moonlight sonata late at night in my dance studio.

I strongly suggest the following people search a thrift store out (if you haven't already done so):
  • Vintage clothes lovers
  • Quality furniture searchers. Especially if you have some basic skills with sanding, varnish and painting.
  • Artist in search of... materials, paints, wool, canvas's, picture frames, odd suprise things you never thought to search for but are the finishing touch to a piece you have been searching for.
  • Small business wanting to get basic furniture for offices and other business type setups.
  • Interior designers and decorators who want to find interesting things to tweak a final look.
  • Book worms may get lost and come out arms full of books.
  • Mad hatters beware, find the right thrift store and there are hats galore, sorry for the rhyme couldn't resist.

With some love and care there are some beautiful additions to my home and wardrobe waiting out there, not to mention the endless amount of things to get creative with. I realised on my first visit that the quality is in many cases higher in a thrift shop than in some highstreet shops. Not to mention the beautiful things people have brought back from which ever they used to live in or visited on holiday. With a discerning eye you can cut through the things of no value and unique items you can't get anywhere else in hte place where you are living.

Just remember if you are thinking to search a thrift shop (charity shop) out, they are not all made the same. Many are great, some are not. Some have a huge choice in clothing whiles others specialize in office furniture.

Happy exploring!

Beauty tip for keeping those winter days at bay

For many of you lucky people you are in your summer now, but us northerners the wonderful winter months are upon us. Whatever the season there is always something we can do to not only help the external beauty but also you internal exquisiteness.

A winter treat, short routine to bring a warm glow

With all the changing between warm cozy houses and the fresh outdoors, its important to look after your skin. The warm dry air inside matched with the cold dry air outside robs your skin of its much needed moisture.

Gather together:
  • a massage oil like almond or peach, or simple olive oil. Different oils promote different qualities, almond oil and apricot are great for combination skin.
  • a small towel and a larger one
  • a trusted moisturizer, The body shop good moisturizers designed for different skin types.
  • moisturizing body wash
  • exfoliating cream: st.Ives apricot scrub is a great one for sensitive skin
  • an exfoliating brush with natural fibers like sea sponge.
  • something to tie you hair off your face and neck.
The type of products you use depends on your skin type, use trusted brands you know won't cause skin irritation and allergy. If anything on the list is new for you then search out advice on what is best for you to use.

The routine:
  1. Tie you hair up so no loose strands will get close to the skin. If you have a chance do nice things for your hair before continuing with this list. Dirty hair will rub against the skin later and possibly ruin some of your work here.
  2. Take the natural exfoliating brush and move it in circles on your dry skin. This is a great for exfoliating the skin while improving circulation and getting rid of dead skin.
  3. Take a shower and use the exfoliating cream on your face and neck. If you like you can use the brush for the body here too.
  4. Use the moisturizing body wash on your body leaving your neck and face free.
  5. Directly after your shower get the natural oil and work into all areas of your of your body including the face and neck. Massaging the oil into the skin. If your hand can't glide over the skin you probably don't have enough oil on there. The dryer the skin the more you will use, as the skin simply laps up this new moisturization.
  6. Get the smallest of the two towels and make it wet using water at a comfortable heat for holding but warm enough that you feel its warmth seep in. Find a relaxed place to sit or lay down with some soothing music, place the towel onto your face and neck creating as much contact with the towel as possible. Relax for 10 minutes, you can repeat this if you like with a newly warmed towel.
  7. Once you are done, take the second dry towel and rub all the excess oil from your body. This step is great for the circulation. The better the circulation is underneath the skin the more it promotes healthy skin on top.
  8. Moisturize your body leaving your neck and face free again. Put something on to keep warm.
  9. Take the wet towel and make it warm again, gently massaging you face and taking excess oil away.
  10. Use a moisturizer for your face and neck, you can add your normal eye cream if you use one. Give this time to dry which can be helped by gently patting your eye area with your finger tips. Avoid rubbing the sensitive skin areas as this can cause more harm than good.
  11. And you are done. Feel free to make this a bedtime treat adding candles for a relaxing mood, heating up the oil to body temperature before using a candle oil burner or pimping it up with things you do in your normal routine. Adding a face mask can also be a great addition.

When i make time for little routines like this the results are super quick. Whether you want to improve skin condition, relax or be good to yourself this is a simple formula you can tweak to make it your own. Little rituals like these helps to bring a little peace in this hectic world.

5 fantastic dances to improve your fitness, which fits your personality type?

Ever wondered why some people tango and others do rock and roll? With a few exceptions that like to mix it up, many people get attracted to different dances. What brings people to a dance in the binning and what keeps people training once they have started? Well I am not sure i have the answers to this but to have a little fun, I have listed 9 dances below and their personality types.

Bohemian thinker / artist

Argentine tango is a mixture of introvert and extrovert. Both for show and social, in full view and danced for the couple alone. Scientists and artists looking for a way to communicate, usually finding hard to do this in every day life. It appeals to the masculine mind with its geometric concepts of lanes and line of dance, circles and angles for turning and much more. Sophistication and trampery in one foul swoop, not to mention the more commonly seen variations in dance couples, men leading men, women leading women gives tango the title Bohemian dance of the group.

Party animal

Salsa - generally extraverted unless you see the natives dance (people dancing a long time to a high level), then it can be slow and sensual. Salsa tends to attract the younger generations who like to party but want something more than simply bouncing around. Full and curvacious, even men will discover hips in this dance. Culture and modern music mixed in a party atmosphere with bright colours and vivacious music filling the whole room,  think carnaval. This dance is queen of the party.

 Sorceress / magician

Flamenco - dramatic outward appearance and a lot more going on inside, strong rhythmic movements. Masculine and feminine mixed together with energy and purpose. Traditional feel and dress exuding the best of old times in performances that make your hair stand up on end. The duality of the masculine and feminine found in this dance rarely seen so equally standing side by side make this the dance of those who want to explore their inner power and expression enabled by the play with live musicians. Making this dance the one divine connection of all things.

    Hippy fest

Folkdance or Balfolk - high energy, fun with simple movements compared to other dances. Great for getting everyone up on the dance floor, its the social animal of all the dances listed here to the point of attracting all those who don't want to go mainstream. Cross culture sharing, hippy hugging and live music create lots of great sharing experiences with this dance.

    Chilled out groover

Swing - with different moves set groovily in the 1920s-1940s jazz scene. Golden oldy or nostalgic young one who likes to get a feel for the richness of a whole range of different dances included in this genre. This dance brings lots of great historic references together with the dance that is still very actively danced today and increasing momentum by all accounts. This dance is king of chilling out and variety.

Please take this as a little fun, i love dancing and think every dance has its charm.

Liked this? then it would be great if you share you dance personality, even if its not the dance you actuality dance at this moment. I often wondered at the personalities of different dances and there are so many that aren't on this list. i made a shortlist this time but maybe another time its nice to broaden it out. i hope you enjoy.
