Finding my niche...Holistic style concept: don't let your clothes wear you!!!

In a personal message a couple of days ago a reader from this blog asked me a really good question. Why have i set up a blog talking about fashion, style and tips for these areas when there are so may already doing this? While i had an answering feeling i wasn't able to directly put it into words until now. While i started the blog as an experiment, finding my way in social media and putting a lot of the things i was learning into blogging. I found that i do indeed have a message that has gone through my work, social and personal life in the last years. Holistic style is a concept i haven't seen anywhere else, although i see many making similar connections. Holistic style is my ongoing message to the world and is an underlying current in many of the articles i write on this blog. I want to empower the individual by giving knowledge and experiences freely. Create more through sharing than holding everything in for myself. so what is Holistic style?

Holistic style is about empowering the individual to think past the outfit into the realms of personal expression and the choices we have. Looking at how we, many of us use clothing as an unconscious barrier for protection with wishes to hide, to be clearly seen and through this hiding, be age appropriate, to fit in with others, to not fit in with others or simply cover up our body with something so we don't get arrested in the street. The list goes on.

Healthy acceptance of the things we can't change and feel less happy with while being proactive with the ones we can do something about. Ok, you can't change your basic build, but with more education and awareness of health, fitness and the inner workings of our mind and troubles that go with this we can open up many choices of how we want to present ourselves to the world. Choosing our barriers, bridging the gap between inner world and how we wish to be seen. Lastly image in an ever increasingly important topic in todays society. With the emphasis on photos, infographics and everything visual. The way we present ourselves through demeanor and style is important. You know when that person who is in your opinion sightly weirdly dressed walks past wearing what looks like every piece of clothing and jewellery they own, you are making a decision and assumptions about who they are. Or that business person who has gone for the power dressing option of wearing a suit, but in actual fact he looks like every other clone to walk into an office becoming invisible. People see the suit and not the individual making a mockery of the idea of power dressing.  Own the suit, bring forth your personality and conquer, ok not advocating war here but a little living in your own skin is a must for all who want to avoid being used by your own clothing.  Don't sit back and let your clothes overpower you, make choices, take control and let the inner beauty shine through.

Womens health and body building

In the good old days you would see the competitions where men compete on TV, lifting everything from the heaviest objects ranging to the weirdest that the organizers could find. i have to admit as a child i was intrigued by them and would watch from beginning until the end. But what about this new seemingly underground phenomena brought to the surface by the all magnifying effect of the internet in recent years. Women bodybuilding, good for the image of womens health or extreme beauty make over yet again?  So what is the attraction for women to get into body building after decades of high profile promotion as a mans sport and what is the difference between women body building, extreme makeovers and womens health.

Depending on who you talk to you will get very different views about women bodybuilding and whether this is actually healthy or not. Often things that are healthy in the first levels can easily become addictive and go too far in a path that leads to things that are less healthy and quite extreme. Fueled by the needs of conforming to a group, exchanging personal wishes for expectations that come in from the outside. Asserting control where there might be a loss of this feeling, possibly through conforming but also any number of other things happening around us on a day to day basis. In many ways we are a society built on perfection that is a stress factor because we can never be this ideal, its unreachable for many. Starting with someone who would like to be healthy. Bring together factors of giving up personal power for conforming, a need for control and perfectionism. Suddenly you have a completely different animal on your hands. This animal will go to all lengths to achieve a desired outcome that is somehow unreachable.

Take this new phenomenan that fit is the new thin, it promotes something healthy but maybe for the wrong reason. Thin was the old way women could conform to a very strong expectation from society  to be feminine, fit with fashion and now being fit is the new thing. The stopping point is different for many and the motivations that drive can be more or less strong.

The problem is that there is a focus on the external, its about image and perfection not health. Someone might start and stop in 2 days. Others who keep going in time get more fit, the first level isn't enough anymore. There is a tendency once in the swing of things to push yourself harder and harder. One extreme of fitness is bodybuilding. Womens body building seems to have taken the typical body image away from the stereotypes of femininity into a whole new direction of strength and power. Using all sorts of tanning and oil lotions to bring show off their muscle. They train for show not health, the bigger and more pronounced the muscle the better. Personally i admire the lengths they go to but at the same time don't understand why you would want to go beyond healthy. Particularly when you hear that some women builders train to the point where they feel breast implants and other accentuations done surgically are necessary to achieve the desired results.

For me personally the idea of womens health is more holistic than all this. It includes eating, thinking, talking, dancing, feeling, exercising, enjoying healthy. The point is that there is more than the perfectionized image that only looks at what we want to attain and through this creating bad psychological health in many. A good healthy lifestyle in men and women brings together a healthy body, mind and heart or in this case emotional well being. By all means be image conscious but for myself i have made the decision that inside comes before societies fashions, but being true to oneself there is more inherent beauty.

Anything that promotes a happy inner world while keeping body, mind and spirit happy for me is the true Healthy.

Lastly i love this quote from Bob Marley (rough translation):

'the most beautiful curve on a womans body is her smile'.
